Plan for four new pedestrian crossings in centre of Tullamore

Offaly County Council has drawn up plans for a new traffic calming scheme in Tullamore, which is set to include the installation of at least four new pedestrian crossings in the centre of the town.

The project will also see the installation of a new 'gateway entrance' on the Clara Road which would be designed to signal a new 'slow zone' for traffic in the town centre.

In addition, 'pedestrian priority zones' are to be created, and certain footpaths are to be refurbished or widened.

The proposed pedestrian crossing points, and associated works, are planned for the Kilbride Street, Cox's Bridge (Clara Bridge) and Clara Road areas of Tullamore. The council recently advertised the details of the scheme which is going through the 'Part 8' process used by the local authority to obtain planning approval for its own projects.

The new pedestrian crossings which are planned will each feature a raised table as a traffic calming measure.

One of the crossings is to be installed on Clara Road, while another is due to be put in place a close distance away, at the junction of Clara Road and Clontarf Road.

Junction re-modelling works are planned to the south of Cox's Bridge in order to accommodate a new raised pedestrian crossing, while another raised pedestrian crossing is earmarked for Kilbride Street, approximately 100m east of Cox's Bridge.

The new gateway entrance due to be put in plane on the Clara Road would, according to the plans, "be designated to create a new slow zone and generate a speed reduction environment" with the exact location for it still to be finalised. There are a number of additional elements to the traffic calming project, including new realigned footpaths, new kerbing, landscaping works and measures to "discontinue vehicular access to the west side of the Kilbride Park Road".

Full details of the proposed works are available for inspection from the council's offices in Tullamore, during office hours, until August 23.

Submissions or observations on the proposed scheme must be made to the council by September 9. They should be addressed to Tom Shanahan, Director of Services, Roads Department, Offaly County Council, Charleville Road, Tullamore.

The council requested that submissions on the project be marked "Part 8 -Proposed Traffic Calming Measures – Clara Road / Clontarf Road, Junction, O’Molloy Street / Pearse Park Junction & Kilbride Street, Tullamore, County Offaly".
