The Tullamore Harriers relay team of Kevin Minnock, Shane Origan, Stephen Byrne and Nigel Cunningham who won the 035 4x100m relay in the National Masters Championships.

Harriers athletes win national titles on home turf

Michael Murphy claimed an impressive victory in the U23 5000m at the 123.ie National Track & Field Championships in Tullamore Stadium last Saturday.

The Tullamore Harriers athlete added this title to his National Novice Cross Country title he won last December.

With a winning time of 15.00.45, Murphy was a clear victor in the race and his club mate Cian Law had a great run to secure the silver medal with a time of 15:30.80. Eanna Moynihan Ó Bradaigh of Dundrum South Dublin AC took the bronze with a time of 15:21.12.

Following on from the National U20 and U23 Championships on Saturday, it was the Masters athletes’ turn to shine on Sunday in Tullamore at the 123.ie National Masters Championships. This concluded the 2024 outdoor track and field season and a very busy few months in the Tullamore Harriers Stadium as most of the national and provincial events were held in Tullamore.

The club was represented by ten masters athletes and despite the unseasonal and inclement weather conditions of wind and rain, they put in great performances and a fine haul of medals were earned.

Kevin Minnock had a standout performance, securing three gold medals: O35 800m with a time of 2:02.79; O35 1500m in 4:20.76; and O35 4x100m relay.

Stephen Byrne won a bronze medal in the O45 100m with a time of 12.12 and gold on the relay team.

The inspirational Mary Walsh captured gold in the O75 200m sprint, clocking in at 43.29 seconds. Joyce Stevenson was 5th in the O55 100m in 16.22.

Shane Origan earned a gold medal in the 4x100m relay and finished fourth in the O40 400m with a time of 58.96.

Olive Mannion had an impressive day, winning silver in the Weight for Distance (4.33m) and the 400m (1:32.08), and bronze in the Javelin (9.23m).

Conor McGrath placed fourth in the O45 Long Jump (4.39m) and sixth in the Shot Putt (7.00m).

Jim Langan, competing in the over 80 category, achieved a stunning triple gold: 800m in 4:02.79; 1500m in 8:58.08; and 3000m in 19:19.99.

Jim Dolan won gold in the O65 Hammer with a throw of 22.42m and placed fourth in both the Weight for Distance (4.73m) and Shot Putt (8.41m).

The Tullamore Harriers 4x100m relay team, consisting of Shane Origan, Stephen Byrne, Kevin Minnock, and Nigel Cunningham, clinched the gold medal with a time of 49.29.
