Megan Burns and Ireland keep quarter final hopes alive

Tullamore's Megan Burns and her Irish team mates enjoyed a resounding 38-0 victory over South Africa in the Olympic Games Women's Rugby Sevens this evening.

It was a key win after Ireland lost their opening Pool B game this afternoon against Great Britain.

Burns was an influential figure with her distribution and management of the game as Ireland notched six tries in a comprehensive win.

The win came at a cost though as Ireland lost captain Lucy Mulhall Rock through injury at the end of the first half.

Ireland now face a huge test against all-conquering Australia in their final Pool B game tomorrow. Australia have already overcome South Africa 34-5 and Great Britain 3.-5.

With the top two from each of the three pools qualifying for the quarter finals, along with the best two of the three third placed teams, Ireland's prospects of reaching the quarter final are still alive.

The game against Australia takes place at 1.30pm tomorrow, Monday.
