Conroy on the mark as Ireland off to a winning start

Offaly's Jordan Conroy scored a first-half try for Ireland Men's Rugby Sevens as they got their Olympic Games off to a winning start this afternoon.

Ireland overcame South Africa 10-5 in the Pool A clash and will now face Japan at 8pm, where a victory will be enough to secure a quarter final place.

Japan lost their opening game in the group this afternoon, 40-12 to New Zealand.

Ireland dominated possession in the opening half, but were forced to wait right up to the end of the half when Conroy touched down in the corner.

Conroy had earlier been denied by TMO decision when he knocked on when reaching for the line.

Although South African captain Selvyn Davids scored a try in the final minute of the game, there was not enough time for Ireland to be pegged back.
