Young rally driver Cody Mahon from Ballyboy.

Talented teenager finishes second in Junior Rallycross Championship

Offaly teenager Cody Mahon clinched second place in the Irish Junior Rallycross Championship at Mondello Park in his debut year competing at this level.

Aged just 14, Cody from Ballyboy was consistently strong all season in his well sponsored Mini Cooper and went into the final weekend of the championship six points clear in first position, but unfortunately he was hit with mechanical issues on both days.

A member of Birr & District Motor Club, Cody managed to take a third spot, despite a gearbox issue, in the race held on May 25 as part of the final weekend.

This left him three points clear and needing at least a second place finish to secure the championship on the following day. This was not to be as again the racing Gods struck another blow when a collision in the first heat rendered his car non-competitive due to a damaged shock. Yet with great skill and determination Cody still managed to qualify for the final.

He also was chosen to represent his country in a mixed Irish British junior race, finishing strongly against the faster British team's Suzuki cars after starting from the back of the grid.

It was a hugely impressive season for the Ballyboy youngster who only started car racing in the Irish junior hot rod championship last summer, where he finished joint first, despite not competing in the first four rounds of the championship.

With the continued support from his sponsors, Cody Mahon will be a name to watch out for in the future.

A son of Mary and Fergal Mahon, Cody is a student of Coláiste Naomh Cormac in Kilcormac.
