Hackett critical as Mary Lou McDonald cheers on Spain

Pippa Hackett has criticised Mary Lou McDonald for tweeting her support for the Spanish football team during last night's European Football Championship final against England.

The Green Party Minister for State described the Sinn Féin leader's support of the Spanish side as "pathetic" on X (formerly twitter).

Hackett was referencing three tweets made by McDonald. The first two tweets saw McDonald appear to celebrate Spain's two goals, tweeting out 'Olé' several times. In the third and final tweet, McDonald congratulated Spain in both Spanish and Irish: "Felicidades! Comhghairdeas to the champions of Europe"

At half past eleven last night, Hackett posted a screenshot of McDonald's tweets, saying: "This is pathetic. At a time when we need leaders to build bridges..."

Hackett's tweet has garnered strong responses from both sides. As of yet, McDonald has not responded to Hackett's criticisms.
