Tullamore Ambulance Station to host open day

Tullamore Ambulance Station has invited the community to join them on Wednesday, July 17 to learn about the day to day life-saving work of the HSE National Ambulance Service (NAS).

Pat Mooney, General Manager, HSE NAS Midlands and Dublin Area said that “Anyone interested can simply drop into the station, located in the grounds of the Midland Regional Hospital, Tullamore, from 10am until 6pm where they can meet the team and learn about the work we at that HSE National Ambulance Service do. We’re excited to showcase our work as we meet the needs of our local community.”

On the day, visitors can view the range of NAS vehicles and equipment used. In addition Community Engagement Officer Amanda Ross will demonstrate CPR using one of the customised manikins used for training.

Additionally, a training overview will be given by Phelim Nevin, Education Competency Assurance Manager. Visitors can learn how the NAS College campus in Tullamore is playing a leading role in training and educating Ireland’s next generation of paramedics.

The NAS Education Campus in Tullamore has seen many student paramedics successfully complete the degree programme. The Tullamore campus is one of three which serve the HSE NAS College established to deliver essential education to new recruits to the service. The other campuses are based in Tallaght in Dublin and in Ballinasloe, Co Galway.

Its midlands location means the Tullamore campus is accessible to students from all over Ireland and positioned to deliver first class clinical and operational skills to its students.

The paramedic course is a degree level programme and NAS maintains a panel of candidates who are invited twice a year to take up available places at the NAS College.

There are some very attractive benefits on offer to paramedic trainees including:

- Paramedic trainees are paid while they are attending the degree course

- Successful completion of the course leads to the awarding of a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree

- Successful candidates will be in a position to take up full time jobs (available) at the end of their training

Emergency medical technicians are required to operate the NAS fleet of ambulances that provide inter-facility transfers between hospitals and facilitate hospital discharges. In addition a regular supply of skilled and specially trained Emergency Call Takers is required for the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) based in Tallaght, Dublin and in Ballyshannon, Co Donegal.

Paramedics can progress in their career to Advanced Paramedic or Community Paramedic roles.

Those interested in a career with NAS can chat to local staff during the Tullamore Station Open Day. Job competitions are advertised during the year. To learn more check the NAS Facebook page or nationalambulanceservice.ie
