Edenderry athlete named on Ireland team for European Championships

Edenderry AC's Cian Crampton has been selected on the Ireland team for the upcoming European Athletics U18 Championships which take place in Slovakia from July 18-21.

Crampton won a bronze medal in the discus event as part of the European Youth Olympics last year. A personal best of 59.32 metres saw Cian secure the bronze medal at the 2023 the European Youth Olympic Festival which was held in Maribor, Slovenia. He was also Team Ireland's flagbearer for the opening ceremony at the European Youth Olympics.

Coached by Peter Collins, Cian will now have his sights set on a top ten finish in the European Championships.

The European Athletics U18 Championships, which will be held in the Slovakian city of Banska Bystrica later this month, was created to promote higher-level competition among the most talented members of this age group in Europe.

Ireland has enjoyed medal success at previous editions of the U18 Championships, most recently with Fintan Dewhirst taking silver in the 400m hurdles back in 2022, and his brother Ethan is among the competitors in the same discipline this year.

Other Irish medallists have included Gina Akpe Moses (100m silver, 2016), Molly Scott (100mh bronze, 2016), Rhasidat Adeleke (200m gold, 2018), Sophie O’Sullivan (800m silver, 2018), and Sarah Healy (1500m gold & 800m gold, 2018).
