Double milestone for mother and son duo
There was a double milestone for mother and son duo, Mairéad and Bruce Scally, at the weekend at Mountlucas parkrun. Bruce, aged only 7, completed his 10th parkrun. After the event, Bruce said "I loved running it. Running is fun. I love spending time with Mam and Pearl and seeing lots of people that we know at parkrun. I especially love running really fast at the end of the parkrun because it feels good."
Bruce completed the parkrun with his mother Mairéad and sister Pearl, but sped ahead to cross the finish line before them both. He completed his parkrun in 31 minutes and 30 seconds. His mother Mairéad said "Bruce is a strong and determined young boy and has taken to completing the 5km parkrun course like a duck to water (an apt metaphor for this milestone as there was heavy rainfall during the parkrun!) I am phenomenally proud of him. Parkrun is a great focus for Bruce, and his sister Pearl, to get them up and active on a Saturday morning."
Mairéad also marked a significant milestone; her 50th time volunteering at Mountlucas parkrun. She outlined "I love being able to volunteer at parkrun and give back to a community that has given me so much." She has taken on a variety of volunteer roles including Run Director, Communications Person, and Timekeeper. She elaborated: "There are a range of volunteer roles, both for people who want to participate and those who are happy to take a week off running or walking." Volunteer roles such as first timers welcome, Tail walker, and communications person enable the volunteer to still complete the parkrun while also supporting the event by volunteering. A parkrun cannot take place without volunteers and Mountlucas parkrun is grateful to all those who support the event by volunteering at it.
