New high-end pizza restaurant opens in Tullamore

A former post office in O'Connor Square in Tullamore, which was built in 1909, has been transformed into a new high-end pizza restaurant.

David McKane of The Small Town Pizza Co. has said it was a priority when opening the restaurant to preserve the historic character of the building, which is a protected structure.

“We wanted to keep the historic element. We loved the art at the front, the old safes, the beams,” McKane explained. “Our interior style is quirky, rustic, and industrial anyways.”

The initial idea for opening his own restaurant came during the pandemic lockdowns, where McKane said he “bought a pizza oven during Covid, when everyone was off work and cooking at home a lot. A few months later and I was cooking dozens of pizzas for family and friends. It was time to bite the bullet and see if we could do it as a business.” The first Small Town Pizza Co restaurant was opened in Adare, Co. Limerick.

His background as a chef in 5-star restaurants around Ireland means that McKane prides his restaurant on their “interesting flavour combinations” and believes that their “high-end pizzas with a bit of a twist” is their USP that sets them apart from takeaway pizza businesses.
