Offaly driver makes Irish motorsport history

Offaly's Alex Dunne made history on Saturday by becoming the first Irish driver to take a podium place in a Formula 3 event.

Dunne (18) finished in second at the sprint race at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.

Dunne, from Clonbullogue, had started in fourth, but made his way into second before the chequered flag.

Dunne, who drives for MP Motorsport, recently joined the McLaren Driver Development Programme, a huge step forward in his young career.

The Spanish Grand Prix Formula 3 main race takes place today, Sunday.
