Aoife Masterson (Sinn Féin), Tullamore

We sent a questionnaire to all 12 candidates running in the Tullamore Electoral Area in the forthcoming Offaly County Council election. The responses were published in print in the Offaly Independent last Friday.

NAME: Aoife Masterson

ADDRESS: 12 Spollanstown Wood, Spollanstown, Tullamore

PARTY: Sinn Féin

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING IN THIS ELECTION?

Currently, we have no Sinn Féin voice on Offaly County Council. Five of the seven councillors representing Tullamore LEA are from Government parties and there to implement failed Government policies. Only one of the seven councillors is a woman and she wasn’t elected but seconded into her husband’s seat.

These things need to change. There is a better and fairer way and I have the policies, ambition, and commitment to deliver on the things that matter to workers, families, and business.

WHAT ARE THE TWO BIGGEST ISSUES IN YOUR AREA?

A lack of housing and access to basic services, especially health, are having a devastating impact across Offaly. People know, if elected, a Sinn Féin government will address these issues. But, we need Sinn Féin councillors in Offaly County Council to ensure our policies of change are implemented, that people across Offaly have the services they need and deserve. Its time for change, and change starts here.

WHO DO YOU MOST ADMIRE AND WHY?

I am continuously inspired and motivated by my campaign manager and former Sinn Féin councillor, Brendan Killeavy. Brendan has been a tireless voice for communities that are so often neglected by politicians. I also admire our former Taoiseach, Brian Cowen. He showed what grounded, principled, and dedicated politicians can achieve and deliver for our communities.

TELL US SOMETHING PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU:

My background is in law and I previously worked for the Ohio Innocence Project helping overturn the convictions of those wrongfully convicted and on death row.

I hope that same steely determination to deliver for people, no matter the odds, will stand to me if elected.
