Gráinne Walsh through to last 16 at Olympic qualification tournament

Gráinne Walsh has won her second fight at the Olympic qualification tournament in Thailand - and now she must win two more in the coming days in order to book her place on the plane to Paris.

The Tullamore woman faced Hyo Sun Hwang, from the People's Republic of Korea, in a bout which got underway at 2pm today (Irish time).

It proved to be a scrappy and stop-start contest, but the cleaner punches were landed by the Irish boxer throughout.

All five judges scored the bout in Walsh's favour, with three awarding her every round, while the other two scored two rounds in her favour and gave one round to Hwang.

Next up for Walsh is a last-16 contest on Friday. If she wins on Friday, she will then be through to the decisive last-eight bout on Sunday, with the winner of that fight assured of a place at the Olympic Games in the 66kg weight category.

Earlier today, Dundalk's former world champion Amy Broadhurst, whom Walsh defeated in the Irish National Elite final in January 2023 and who has since declared for Team GB, won her second qualification bout in Thailand in the 60kg weight class.

If Broadhurst qualifies for the Olympics for Team GB, there is a possibility that she could come up against Ireland's Kellie Harrington in Paris.
