Progress on plans for new Waterways Ireland depot

Waterways Ireland’s maintenance depot will move from its current waterside location in Tullamore to a green field site on the edge of the town in Cappincur, adjacent to the Grand Canal and the N52 bypass.

Tenders have been sought for the project with a closing date this month, indicating that work is likely to get underway on the project later this year.

Three new buildings are to be developed on the new site, an admin building, a carpentry workshop and a mechanical workshop. This project will free up space in the harbour area of Tullamore town centre and open up the possibility of a redevelopment and a revitalisation of the entire area in the future.

The Cappincur development will involve the construction of a maintenance depot with warehouses. The site is approximately 4.5 acres, and the land is of reasonable construction quality. The contract duration is 15 months.

Operations Controller at Waterways Ireland Éanna Rowe previously said that it was “really exciting” that the depotm would move to a greenfield site in Cappincur.
