John Leahy (Non-Party), Birr
We sent a questionnaire to all 15 candidates running in the Birr Electoral Area in the forthcoming Offaly County Council election. The responses were published in print in the Offaly Independent last Friday.
NAME: John Leahy
ADDRESS: 19 Glendine, Kilcormac.
PARTY: Non-Party.
SPECIAL AREAS OF INTEREST:
I have a genuine interest in engaging with people. It doesn't matter whether it's through my work as an auctioneer, my involvement in GAA or my work as a councillor, working with various groups and committees to see projects through - I get a real kick out of meeting different people and engaging with them.
WHY ARE YOU RUNNING IN THIS ELECTION?
I know I have something real to offer the people. While I fully respect all those who are willing to put their name on the ballot paper, my record speaks for itself. I'm not a populist who tells everyone what they want to hear.
I am someone who has constantly worked with those in Offaly County Council to deliver for the people in my electoral area. I understand the enthusiasm of many of the people who put their name on the ballot paper – they believe they will sort everything. If only it was as simple as that. I understand the job fully – that’s why I've put my name on the ballot paper.
WHAT ARE THE TWO BIGGEST ISSUES IN YOUR AREA?
On a local level it's roads, roads, roads. I am getting that message loud and clear.
The other issue is housing – not just provision of housing but planning permissions in rural areas.
WHO DO YOU MOST ADMIRE AND WHY?
Volunteers. They give endless hours of their time on committees and serving in various organisations, never receive a cent, get very little recognition and sometimes are met with abuse. They are the real heroes of our country.
TELL US SOMETHING PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU:
I've never taken a drink of alcohol in my life and, after family and work, my faith and the GAA are important parts of my life.
