Profile of a parkrunner: Meet Geraldine
Meet Geraldine Mahon who has completed more than 30 parkruns as the designated volunteer “tailwalker”.
When did you first complete a parkrun?
I did my first parkrun in January 2018. Operation Transformation was airing on TV and that inspired me to try something new and get fit. I used to feel guilty when I started parkrun because I thought I was keeping the timekeepers and others waiting for us walkers to return. Some people might feel put off by the name parkrun and think that it’s only for runners but I’ve since learned that it’s just as much for walkers as it is for runners. It’s very inclusive to all levels of fitness. When Kevin, the Volunteer Coordinator asked me to be a tailwalker I said “No problem, I’m always going to be last anyway!” I’ve now completed more than 130 parkruns, all at Mountlucas parkrun and I’ve been the designated tailwalker for 30 of these. The tailwalker’s role is to be the last person to finish the parkrun. It’s a very enjoyable role supporting the other walkers to complete their parkrun.
What is your favourite thing about parkrun?
I try to get out for a walk every day but the social aspect of walking with a group gives me more encouragement to get out and go that little bit further. It’s great to meet different people each week and have a chat as we complete the parkrun, as well as catch up with the familiar faces.
What is your favourite parkrun memory?
My favourite parkrun memory is when I saw my walking partner Rita Corcoran celebrate her 200th parkrun. Rita and I complete most of our parkruns together. It’s a great opportunity to maintain our fitness as well as our friendship!
What word best describes Mountlucas parkrun?
It is such a peaceful environment, away from the hustle and bustle so I think peaceful is the word I would choose to describe Mountlucas parkrun.
