Aubrey Claffey (Aontú), Birr

We sent a questionnaire to all 15 candidates running in the Birr Electoral Area in the forthcoming Offaly County Council election. The responses were published in print in the Offaly Independent last Friday.

NAME: Aubrey Claffey

ADDRESS: Newtown, Lusmagh, Banagher.

PARTY: Aontú

SPECIAL AREAS OF INTEREST:

I am interested in supporting people and communities to thrive. My focus is on building strong community involvement and connections to ensure everyone feels represented and engaged in their communities. Local business support, community development, enhancing public spaces and supporting our farmers all play a pivotal role in creating a vibrant and sustainable community.

WHY ARE YOU RUNNING IN THIS ELECTION?

Across our communities, there's a prevailing sense of disillusionment and a significant lack of representation. I believe with the right people on the council we can reignite the spirit of our communities and foster prosperity again. Aligning with Aontú, a party of the people for the people, was a natural choice for me. Their core values and beliefs resonate deeply with my own - they stand firmly on the principles of common sense, openness and transparency.

WHAT ARE THE TWO BIGGEST ISSUES IN YOUR AREA?

Housing and healthcare are two issues people have raised repeatedly, amongst others.

WHO DO YOU MOST ADMIRE AND WHY?

My sister Corrinne. Her influence on my decision to run for the council is immeasurable. Corrinne has not only been my staunchest supporter but also my source of encouragement to step forward and make a difference in our community. For many years she has helped those in need. Whether it's providing essential resources, like food and clothing, or tirelessly advocating for proper representation and amplifying the voices of the unheard, Corrinne's dedication to championing change is unparalleled and those qualities I will bring with me into this new journey.

TELL US SOMETHING PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT YOU?

I have a big passion for art. I've been lucky to have my artwork displayed in some well-known art museums and to work with many organisations in using art for mindfulness.
