'Significant damage' after fire at Offaly recycling facility

Significant damage has been caused to a major waste recycling facility near Tullamore.

A major blaze broke out at the Bord na Mona Recycling facility in Tullamore last night.

Offaly Fire Services confirmed it was called to a fire at the recycling facility on the Cappincur Road just before 9pm last night.

Fire crews from Tullamore, Clara, Kilbeggan and a water tanker from Edenderry responded initially to the incident.

The fire services said: "There are no injuries to report however there has been significant damage to the building."

The fire is under control and one crew remain on scene dampening down the fire.

In response to a query, Bord Na Móna said: "We are currently investigating the cause of a fire at our Bord na Móna Recycling facility at Cappincur, Tullamore last night (29 February). The fire was contained with support from local fire services, for which we are extremely grateful.

"The facility will remain closed while the damage is assessed. Thankfully no injuries were reported, and all employees are safe.

"Waste collection services in the area will continue as usual and we advise customers to leave their bins out as normal. If there are any changes to collections Bord na Mona Recycling will contact customers via text message.

"Any commercial customers impacted will be contacted by their sales representative."
