Photo of Gráinne's glorious moment nominated for prize

A photograph of Tullamore boxer Gráinne Walsh celebrating a sweet victory over Amy Broadhurst was nominated for a prize in the Press Photographers Association of Ireland Awards.

The superb photo, taken by Seb Daly of the Sportsfile agency, graphically shows Gráinne's unbridled elation when she jumped into the air after the win over her highly rated opponent.

It was nominated in the sport feature category of the awards which are sponsored by AIB.

The photo was taken in January 2023 after Walsh defeated Broadhurst in the welterweight (66kgs) final of the IABA National Elite Boxing Championships at the National Boxing Stadium.

A daughter of Geraldine and Gerry Walsh, Gráinne began her boxing career with the Spartacus Boxing Club in Tullamore.

Now representing St Mary's BC in Tallaght, Walsh was recently named in the Irish squad for the second Olympic qualifying tournament for the 2024 Olympic Games. The qualifying tournament will take place in Italy next month.

Walsh is the national elite champion at 66kgs for the last two years and, having shown admirable fortitude in overcoming several injury setbacks, she would dearly love to represent her country in the Paris Olympics.
