WATCH: Local weather forecaster ice skates across Offaly bog
Offaly forecaster Cathal Nolan of Ireland's Weather Channel has utilised his knowledge to enjoy an ice skate across an Offaly bog and shared a recent video of the experience on social media.
The Rhode native said that there's only a few isolated spots in the Midlands where it's possible to ice-skate due to the shallow depth of the ponds on the bog and the risks being minimal. "That ice was 2.5/3 inches thick at best."
The local forecaster urged others not to try skating outside without training. He explained: "This was shot on a lake that’s no more than four inches deep, the ice here is three inches thick, and I’ve been trained in reading ice conditions from my time living in the Alps."
"This is the second time I’ve had the joy of ice skating on frozen ponds in the bogs in Offaly, the last time being in 2021. I’ve also had the pleasure of ice skating on the canal in 2009 and 2010 when the Grand Canal was frozen to ten inches thick."
