Two Offaly players on hurling/shinty squad to face Scotland

Offaly has two players on the Ireland squad named today for a hurling/shinty international against Scotland in Newry this month.

Birr's Eoghan Cahill and Cillian Kiely of Kilcormac/Killoughey were included in the Irish squad for the game which will be played at Páirc Esler on Saturday, October 21, and will be shown live on TG4's YouTube channel.

The interruption of the Covid-19 pandemic means this is the first hybrid game to be played since 2019.

Local Poc Fada star Kiely, Laois's Ryan Mullaney, and Down's Caolan Taggart were all previously involved in the last hurling/shinty game four years ago.

The Irish team is being managed by Damien Coleman from Galway.

"We are delighted with our progress; we have a strong panel assembled for the hurling-shinty International with representation from 14 counties," said Coleman.

"It's vital that we as an association maintain our traditions, and this event affords hurlers from all tiers the opportunity to play together.

"The players are all looking forward, as are all our management team to October 21 when we welcome the Scotland team to Páirc Esler."

The game gets underway at 2.45pm on October 21. The full Irish squad is as follows:
