ODVSS welcomes paid leave for domestic abuse victims

Offaly Domestic Violence Support Service (ODVSS) has welcomed the recent announcement from Minister for Equality Roderic O’Gorman that victims of domestic violence will be able to receive their full pay if they need to take leave from work.

Domestic violence leave will be formally introduced in the autumn with the publication of regulations setting out the rate of pay and guidance for employers. Victims of domestic abuse will be able to take five days leave, this new leave was introduced as part of the Work Life Balance Act, which was passed earlier this year.

CEO of ODVSS Anne Clarke said this new leave provides the opportunity for a victim of domestic abuse to take time to access support and advice without affecting their job or weekly income.

"Victims may have to attend court on several occasions when seeking a domestic violence order or access arrangements,” she pointed out, adding that many of the service's clients who attend for support would experience financial abuse, and this can lead to more pressure and anxiety. "Ensuring that victims will receive their full pay will certainly reduce this stress somewhat," she said. Workers will have to disclose the type of leave they are taking to their employer, but do not have to provide any evidence.

ODVSS provides training and information for businesses on developing policies and procedures around Domestic Violence & the Workplace and have information brochures available free for organisations.

"We are already working with HR Managers and employers throughout Offaly in assisting them with this new leave and helping them to respond to disclosure of domestic abuse in their organisations," said Ms Clarke.
