TG4 documentary about Irish troops in the Congo being shown tonight

A documentary about the Siege of Jadotville and the other involvements by Irish troops in the Congo in the early 1960s will be broadcast tonight (Wednesday) on TG4.

The hour-long programme Congo 1961- Troid ar Son na Síochána was made more than a decade ago, and first aired in 2012.

It's described as featuring "a compelling blend of pathos, tragedy and humour, depicting a brutal coming of age," as it explores the Irish Defence Forces' first mission overseas, from 1960 to 1964, to the newly independent, war-ravaged Democratic Republic of the Congo.

"In this programme, the veterans recount their experiences and describe the events that claimed the lives of 26 comrades and changed the course of Irish military history," said TG4.

Congo 1961- Troid ar Son na Síochána is being shown on TG4 at 9.30pm tonight, Wednesday, August 2.
