‘Pavee Lackeen’ exhibition launched for Traveller Pride Week

'Pavee Lackeen', a celebration of culture and diversity, is the title of a collective exhibition showcasing artwork from a group of integrational Traveller women based in Tullamore.

Facilitated by FUSION Youth Diversion Project in partnership with Offaly Local Development Company, a six-week programme was established with the view of celebrating Traveller Pride Week 2023. This initiative was funded by Traveller pride week and directed by creative artist Julie O’Hea from Creative Endeavors.

This textile weaving project gave participants hands-on skills on how to make their own loom from easy-to-source everyday objects; a hula hoop, replacing the need for expensive equipment like a loom. A circular woven artwork, individual to each woman was created on this hula hoop. Emphasis was placed on recycling and reusing; creating beauty with something unwanted.

Participants used old clothing, sheets, material etc. cut into strips for yarn, in addition to wool to create their woven pieces. The hula hoop loom frame remained as part of the final art pieces – the spokes on the loom resembling the spokes of a wagon wheel; a symbol of the rich culture and tradition that is the Travelling community.

This 6-week programme concluded with an exhibition evening in by the Tullamore Library which was open to family, friends and wider public during Traveller Pride Week. This evening was a great success with some of the participants speaking about their experience on the night. Youth Work Ireland Tullamore Music Generation band performed, followed by some refreshments to support the celebration of the women’s art work and Traveller Pride Week 2023.
