Tullamore twice the size of next biggest town
New Census figures show that Tullamore town had a population of some 15,598 in April last.
It places Tullamore as the 28th most populated town in Ireland, and with almost twice the population of the next largest town in Offaly, Edenderry.
The population of Portarlington town, across both the Laois and Offaly parts, is 9,288.
Of Offaly towns with a population of at least 500 people in April 2022, Daingean was the youngest, with an average age of 35.5 years. The oldest was Shinrone, with an average age of 43.7 years. Nationally, the average age was 38.8 years.
In April 2022, 49% of Offaly’s usual residents (40,155 people) were born in the county. A further 37% (30,601) were born elsewhere in the State. The remaining 14% (11,881) were born outside the State, which was up from 12% in 2016. Nationally, 20% of the usually resident population in April 2022 was born outside of the State.
The new figures show that Edenderry had a population of 7,888, whilst Birr was the third largest town with a population of 4,726.
The remainder of the top ten towns in Offaly were: Clara (3,402), Banagher (1,907), Ferbane (1,324), Daingean (1,223), Kilcormac (1,051), Mucklagh (918) and Rhode (841).
