New course records set in Naomh Mhuire 5k

Peter Somba and Nadine Donegan both set race records at the Naomh Mhuire AC hosted Ambrose Hickey Memorial 5k race in Daingean last Friday evening.

Nadine clocked 16.57, surpassing the previous course record of 17.35.

Heather Murphy from St Michael’s AC finished as the second fastest woman with a time of 17.15 and Aisling O’Connor from Edenderry AC was third with 17.44.

Peter Somba from Dunboyne AC was the leader from the start finishing the race in an impressive time of 15.13, breaking the previous record by four seconds.

Mick Fogarty from Ferbane AC had Peter in sight throughout the race and maintained his second position with a time of 15.26, and Paul Mitchell of Tullamore Harriers AC finished in third in 15.37.

The Tullamore Harriers women’s team claimed victory in Division 1 category. The team members were Nadine Donegan, Evelyn Herlihy, Rachel Henry, and Nita McLoughlin. Naomh Mhuire ladies, consisting of Lisa Murphy, Aileen Flynn, Ursula O’Reilly and Orla Hannon were the first team in Division 2.

In the men’s team category, Ferbane AC emerged as the winning team in Division 1, thanks to the efforts of Mick Fogarty, Paul Buckley, Darragh Hynes and Niall Kelly, while Ballyskenach AC men’s team, comprising Tom Lupton, Patrick McCarthy, Michael Maher and Peter Ormond, clinched first place in Division 2.

Congratulations to all the participants for their outstanding performances, and a special shoutout to the organizing team of Naomh Mhuire AC for hosting a successful event, made even better by the beautiful weather. The prizes were presented by Mary Shaughnessy and Janette McCormack, both sisters of the late Ambrose Hickey.
