RTE 1 to showcase 'God in the Bottle' tradition tomorrow night
A selection of ancient traditions and architectural gems in Offaly will be under the spotlight on RTE 1 television tomorrow night (Wednesday) including the rare and intricate craft known as 'God in the Bottle.'
The magnificent work of master craftsmen from the county, Pat Gorman from Killurin, Killeigh and Eddie Hendrick and his father, Ned, from Shannonbride will be showcased on 'Nationwide' which airs at 7pm on RTE 1, after a camera crew from the programme visited Offaly last month.
The RTE crew worked in close conjunction with Offaly County Council's senior architect, Rachel McKenna, on the programme and visited a number of locations across the county to identify unique heritage and architectural projects.
Rachel McKenna, who has written two books about Offaly, and is passionate about preserving the architecture and heritage of the county, was instrumental in unearthing the ancient craft of 'God in the Bottle' which brought her into contact with the Hendricks family and Pat Gorman.
Also featuring on the 'Nationwide' programme will be three follies in Offaly, Acres Folly which is located at the Tullamore Municipal District building known as Acres Hall; Gloster Arch in Birr and the unique suspension bridge in Kinnity.
Presenter of the programme and Monasterevin-based broadcaster, Mary Fanning, says she uncovered "a wealth of hidden crafts" on her journey through Offaly in the company of Rachel McKenna.
To find out more, make sure to tune into RTE 1's 'Nationwide' programme at 7pm tomorrow night (Wednesday, March 1).
