Lusmagh set to remember The Manchester Martyrs in words and song

The annual wreath laying ceremony in memory of the Manchester Martyrs will take place in Kilmochonna Graveyard on Sunday, November 20 next at 11am (after 10am Mass).

An evening of words and songs will also be held this year in Eugene Flynn's Bar & Restaurant, Banagher starting at 7.30pm on the same day.

The event will recall the songs celebrating the martyrs, the last words spoken by them, the various monuments erected to their memory throughout Ireland and other matters relating to their story.

At the first of many mock funerals held throughout Ireland after the execution of the martyrs on the 23 November 1867 many of the mourners wore green garments.

One of The Manchester Martyrs Michael Larkin was a native of Lusmagh. He was only 30 when he was executed at Salford Prison Manchester on November 23,1867.

When the The Manchester Martyrs monument was unveiled in Birr in 1894, Michael Larkin's mother was in attendance and was exclusively attired in green.

Those wishing to wear green at the forthcoming events are encouraged to do so.
