Two Offaly residents included on latest tax defaulters list

A farmer and a retired builder from Offaly have been included on the latest tax defaulters list, which was published by Revenue this week.

Sean Doughan, a retired builder from Moneygall, Birr, and John Mooney, a farmer from Kilmaine, Fortal, Birr, were included on the list after reaching settlements with Revenue amounting to a combined total of €380,000.

Mr Doughan's case involved an investigation by Revenue of non-declaration of income tax. His settlement, which totalled €210,362, consisted of €62,770 in tax, €104,795 in interest and €44,797 in penalties.

Mr Mooney's case involved a revenue audit which found an under-declaration of VAT. A settlement of €169,955 has been published, which includes tax of €84,269, interest of €60,405 and penalties of €25,281.

According to the Revenue list, Mr Doughan's settlement has been fully paid, while €166,655 of Mr Mooney's settlement was unpaid as of June 30, 2022.

The latest tax defaulters list was published yesterday (Tuesday) and related to the period between April 1 and June 30 this year.

According to Revenue, "settlements are published when the extensive voluntary disclosure options are not availed of and the default arises because of careless or deliberate behaviour."
