Offaly goes green to show support for organ donation
Offaly County Council has lit up three key areas in Tullamore this week to show their support for the Irish Kidney Association's annual campaign to raise awareness of the importance of organ donation.
Green is the internationally recognised colour associated with organ donation for transplanation, and with Organ Donor Awareness Week taking place across the country all this week, Offaly County Council has lit up Tullamore Library, O'Connor Square and the Town Hall in green to show solidarity with the campaign.
The local authority has joined forces with County Councils around Ireland who are also lighting up public sites and buildings in green from dawn to dusk throughout this week in support of Organ Donor Awareness Week and to encourage people to #Share Your Wishes.
The aim of Organ Donor Awareness Week is to shine a light on the plight of people with organ failure and the gift of life through transplantation, and the key message that the organisers of the event want to get across is to Share Your Wishes.
Individuals who wish to support organ donation are encouraged to Share Their Wishes and keep the reminders of their decision available by carrying the organ donor card, permitting Code 115 to be included on their driver’s licence or having the ‘digital organ donor card’ App on their smartphone. Organ Donor Cards can be requested by visiting the IKA website www.ika.ie/get-a-donor-card or to your phone, phoning the Irish Kidney Association on 01 6205306 or Free text the word DONOR to 50050
