Funeral details announced for the late Liam Kenny
Funeral details have been announced for well-known Rahan auctioneer and former publican, Liam Kenny, who tragically died in a road traffic accident outside Mucklagh on Monday morning of this week.
The much-loved father of six will repose at his family home, Grand Canal House in Rahan, from 2pm until Rosary at 8pm tomorrow afternoon (Thursday, February 17), and his Funeral Mass will take place in St. Carthage’s Church, Killina on Friday at 11am, followed by burial afterwards in Rahan Cemetery.
The tragic death of Mr. Kenny, who was aged 70, caused huge shock and disbelief in the communities of his beloved Rahan, and also in the wider Tullamore area where he was extremely well-known and respected.
Described as “quiet, gentle and decent” by all who knew him, his unexpected death is being mourned by the tightly-knit community of Rahan and the surrounding area, but will be felt most acutely by his beloved wife, Margaret, and his adoring children Ruth, Edel, Grace, Alana, Catherine and Liam Óg.
He is also survived by his ten adored grandchildren Eve, Oliver, Tiernan, Fiadh, Cara, Ceola, Daisy, Charlie, Bobby and Louis, his sons-in-law Adrian, Davy, John, Paul and Aaron, his brothers Carthage and Joe and his sister Annie, along with his relatives, dear friends and neighbours.
The late Mr. Kenny was the very popular proprietor of the Thatch Pub in Rahan for many years and also ran a very successful auctioneering business which brought him into contact with people all over the country and from all walks of life.
The popular businessman lost his life in a road traffic accident on Monday morning last on the busy N52 road at Bunaterin, on the outskirts of Mucklagh when the car in which he was the sole occupant collided with a lorry just after 10am.
The driver of the lorry, a man in his 30’s, was treated at the Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore for non-life threatening injuries, according to Gardai.
The N52 road was closed for several hours on Monday to facilitate Forensic Collision Investigators who examined the scene, and Gardai are appealing for any witnesses to the collision to come forward.
Among the many tributes paid to the late Liam Kenny since news of his tragic and unexpected death became known was one from the staff and students of Killeigh National School, where six of his ten grandchildren are pupils. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Liam’s six grandchildren in our school and their parents, Edel and Davy, Ruth and Adrian” the tribute read.
Another tribute from the Tullamore Clara District Executive of Fine Gael described the late Mr. Kenny as “a decent man held in regard and respect by all.”
Local Fianna Fáil councillor, Tony McCormack, also paid tribute to Liam Kenny, and described him as being “extremely well-known and respected in the wider Tullamore area” and said news of his tragic death had left the whole community reeling after a spate of tragedies over the past month.
