Offaly History mourns the loss of popular writer and historian

The death has occurred of John Kearney, Daingean, writer and manager of Offaly History for 34 years.

John died on 20 July peacefully surrounded by his wife and family at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.

Posting on social media, Offaly History said “it is with great regret that we advise our members and friends of the death of John Kearney who was the Offaly History manager for 34 years.

“In all that period he was the perfect gentleman with staff, society members and the public and popular with all.

“In the care of both people and premises he was thoroughly reliable and a most careful manager.”

The post continued to recognise John’s part in the growth of the society from the mid-1980s.

“Our thoughts are with his wife Mary and his wider family and friends,” it concluded.

Commenting, one mourner said:

“John was one of life's gentlemen, loved his stories at break times in Offaly History, his wealth of knowledge in history was amazing!”

Another said John “was an absolute gentleman and a pleasure to work with.

“He was always so good humoured, so knowledgeable and kind to everyone that came through the door. He will be sadly missed.”

John is sadly missed by his wife Mary, sister Margaret, aunt Sr. Bridie, nephews, grandnephews, grandniece, brother-in-law Bernie, sisters-in-law Cora and Mary, his wife Mary's nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, neighbours, relatives and many friends.

Due to the Covid-19 restrictions the house is strictly private and the family thank people for their support and understanding at this difficult time.

Removal from his home on Saturday to Mary Mother of God Church, Daingean arriving for Requiem Mass at 12 noon.
