New Peatlands Visitor Centre planned for region
Bord na Móna have been working with a number of partners to progress the establishment of a Peatlands Centre of Excellence in the midlands.
The Government has announced that work has been ongoing on the project.
The centre, or something similar, has also been recommended by the Just Transition Commissioner Kieran Mulvey in his progress report published today.
Mulvey was appointed in November 2019 to help chart a just transition from fossil fuels in the midlands.
In its initial response to the report by Mulvey, the Government this evening said the centre would focus on the role peatlands can play in climate mitigation and adaptation and would include a visitor centre that promotes climate action.
Funding has been applied for under the EU LIFE Programme. A number of Government Departments and agencies have also committed resources to the project.
In his report, Mr Mulvey recommended that a “Centre for Climate Change” should be established in the Midlands.
He said: “The purpose of such a centre would be to create an informative visitor centre for the documentation of the Midlands transformative process to a low carbon economy and the eco-sustainability of Ireland’s climate change policies and programmes.
It would also chart the history of Bord na Móna and the ESB activity over the last seven decades
He said it should be based in a Bord Na Móna facility and it would serve the dual function of a visitor attraction and an information centre for our primary and secondary school students.
