Birr man defrauded by bogus caller

Gardai have urged members of the public to exercise caution when divulging personal information over the phone or online after a person in the Birr area was defrauded out of thousands of euros.

The person received a phonecall from a man claiming to work for Eir. The fraudster asked the person to go online and after the victim answered series of questions stole what Gardai described as a “substanial sum of money”.
“Garda advice is never ever giver personal information or access to bank accounts no matter how convincing and persistent a caller may be. Calls like these are generally always matters of fraud and deceipt,” a Garda spokesperson said.
