‘Cold weekend and even colder winter’
If you’re going anywhere this bank holiday weekend, make sure that you wrap up warm as temperatures are set to plummet.
Cathal Nolan of the Midlands Weather Channel says that night time temperatures could fall as low as minus four degrees Celsius over the weekend with the cold spell beginning today, Friday.
While there has been talk about some parts of the country experiencing a ‘white Halloween’, Mr Nolan believes that it is highly unlikely that any children will be trick or treating in the snow. “The possibility does exist that there could be an outbreak of very cold weather towards the end of October, but I don’t think it will bring too much in the way of snow to the midlands,” he said.
“The introduction of very cold air will cause some severe frost, with temperatures falling as low as minus four degrees Celsius. In terms of snow and other wintry precipitation, it looks as though Ulster and north west Connacht have the highest chance, with some snowfall likely over high ground.”
Mr Nolan predicts that we could be in for one of our coldest winters in over a decade.
The Offaly-based climatologist, who is usually spot on when it comes to his warnings of extreme weather events says we can expect a “colder than average winter across the country”. Lower than average rainfall totals, increased seasonal snowfall amounts, particularly along eastern and northern coastal areas, and many central counties, are in his prediction.
“The general trend indicates that a colder than average winter seems likely. In terms of the timing of such cold spells our forecast projections would suggest that the coldest periods of the forthcoming winter are likely to occur during the second half of the season, after Christmas and early in the new year.”
