Two arrested in Dublin after Mountmellick burglary
Gardaí arrested two men in Dublin following a burglary in Mountmellick which resulted in a pursuit along the M7 this morning.
At approximately 1am this morning, Gardaí from Portlaoise were informed that a burglary had occurred at a house in Mountmellick, Co Laois and that a car belonging to the homeowner had been taken. A second car, a Ford Mondeo was also seen close to the scene of the burglary.
Local Gardaí alerted a number of National Units including the armed Regional Support Unit and the Air Support Unit. The car continued along the motorway(M7) towards Dublin. It failed to stop for Gardaí, however it was later stopped on Cherry Orchard Avenue and a 22 year old man was arrested. He was taken to Portlaoise Garda station where he was detained under the provisions of section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
A short time later a Ford Mondeo was stopped on Cherry Orchard Court and the driver, also a 22 year old man, was arrested and taken to Portlaoise Garda station where he was detained under the provisions of section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
One of the men was charged and will appear before Portlaoise District Court at 10.30am tomorrow morning. The second male was released without charge and a file is being prepared for the DPP.
