Smullen is champion flat jockey again

Rhode native Pat Smullen was crowned Champion Flat Jockey for the eighth time today as the flat season came to a close in Leopardstown today.

Horse Racing Ireland chairman Joe Keeling presented the trophy to Smullen, who first captured the title in 2000.

Smullen rode his 100th winner in Ireland this season on Friday night at Dundalk. He also crossed the 100 winner barrier last season becoming only the second Flat jockey to accomplish this feat, following in the footsteps of Michael Kinane in 2003.

He finished the season with 103 winners with last year’s Champion Apprentice Colin Keane in second place.
