Whelan resigns as Offaly hurling boss

Brian Whelahan has resigned from the role of Offaly senior hurling manager.

The Offaly hurling legend indicated after the heavy defeat to Clare in the All-Ireland SHC Qualifiers that he would be interested in staying on. However, the Birr man has since stepped down from the position after two seasons in charge.

Offaly GAA revealed the news on its twitter account, posting the following tweets:

“Brian Whelahan has announced that he will not be seeking reappointment as Offaly Senior Hurling Manager.”

“We wish to thank Brian Whelahan for the work he's done and the time & effort he has put in with our Senior Hurlers over the past two years.”

The Offaly hurlers endured a bitterly disappointing Championship campaign this year, losing to neighbours Laois for the first time in over 40 years. And, in the Qualifiers, Clare dished out a 3-26 to 0-15 hammering to Offaly.

Whelahan, known to many as ‘Sid’, is regarded as one of the greatest wing-backs in hurling history and he won two All-Ireland medals with Offaly. However, his spell as manager has not proved a successful time for the Faithful County.

A multiple All-Ireland club title winner with Birr, Whelahan had originally sought the position of Offaly minor hurling manager but County Board officials then asked him to fill the senior vacancy.
