Woman charged with daughters murder in tullamore

A woman appeared before a sitting of Tullamore District Court this morning charged with the murder of her daughter.

Bernadette Scully (56) with an address at Emvale, Bachelors Walk, Tullamore is charged with the murder of Emily Barut (11) at Bachelors Walk on September 15, 2012.

She was arrested at her home at Bachelors Walk at 9.40 this morning. Detective Sgt Jer Glavin gave evidence of arrest and caution. He said Ms Scully made no reply when charged.

Det Sgt Glavin applied to have Ms Scully remanded in custody to the Dochas Centre to reappear before Tullamore District Court on Wednesday.

Solicitor Patricia Cronin told Judge Catherine Staines that an application will be made for legal aid. She asked the Judge to recommend that “any necessary medical attention be provided” to the defendant and that she be assessed while in custody.

Judge Staines consented to the request and remanded the defendant in custody to reappear before Tullamore District Court on Wednesday.
Ms Scully sat quietly during the brief proceeding.
