Dochas to benefit from Offaly Slimathon
Four years on from raising more than €24,000 for cancer support group Dochas, an Offaly Lenten Slimathon launched yesterday (Thursday) is hoping to raise more funds for the charity this year.
The 2014 Offaly Lenten Slimathon will see participants who register for the challenge later this month get free membership to the Tullamore Court Hotel gym for six weeks during the Lenten season, along with an invite to a weekly walk/jog in Tullamore Harriers.
The slimathon is this year taking place in association with the Tullamore Court Hotel, Print Plus and Deirdre’s Hair Care, with support from Tullamore Harriers, Elma’s Beauty Salon and Corina Haverty from Edgewater Weight Management Clinic.
Registration for the slimathon will take place between 6pm and 8pm on February 28 in the Tullamore Court Hotel, while participants can also pre-register by texting or calling their name and address to 086 2288720.
At the February 28 event there will also be a motivational speaker, fitness and lifestyle coach and a nutritionist to give advice and support.
Speaking at the launch, organiser Cllr Tony McCormack said he can’t wait to get started with the challenge.
“We are looking forward to getting as many people involved as possible to raise as much money as we can but also to help people get on the path to a healthier and fitter lifestyle,” he said. “We are delighted with the continued support of the Tullamore Court Hotel and also our new partners.”
Fellow organiser Deirdre Hyland outlined why it’s so important to remember charities.
“We raised in excess of €24,000 for Dochas 4 years ago,” she said. “It is more difficult for charities to raise money in the current climate and also because of the bad PR some national charities have created around salaries and expenses. Local, well deserving charities like Dochas shouldn’t suffer for the mistakes of others. They provide a wonderful service for the people of the Midlands and we want to help them to continue this great work going forward.”
