Last gasp call to give Edenderry Christmas lights

Christmas in Edenderry might be a grim affair if a last minute bid for Christmas lights for the town isn’t successful.

According to the chairperson of Edenderry Credit Union Business Support Siobhan Swords funds raised in the past that covered the costs of erecting lights in the town have run out, leaving nothing in the kitty for some festive cheer this year.

With lights in storage ready to go, Siobhan said a total of €5,000 must be raised between now and the end of the month to cover the costs of putting them up and powering them.

Edenderry Town Council puts up a Christmas tree and lights at the town hall each Christmas. Those lights will be turned on on December 8, and Siobhan said she’s hoping locals will stump up for lights for the rest of the town from that date too.

“It would be a disappointment if the lights were not erected this year as they bring such a positive atmosphere to the town during the Christmas period,” Siobhan said.

“They entice people into the town and might make them stay in the town for longer. If there aren’t any Christmas lights in Edenderry they’re going to go somewhere else for their shopping.”

Hope isn’t lost yet. Already almost €1,000 has been raised via donations to the cause. Siobhan is hoping with a bit of publicity that can be raised to the necessary €5,000.

Letters have this week gone out to local businesses, but Siobhan said donations are welcome from not just businesses, but also schools, clubs and individuals. “Remember, the Christmas lights are for everyone,” she said.

All payments to the fund can be made through Edenderry Credit Union until November 30 next. Cheques can be made payable to ECUBS. Organisers will also furnish a full breakdown of the costs involved to all contributors.
