Birr Theatre's November line-up
With nights closing in faster now, you have the perfect excuse to spend your evenings indoors at one of the great performances set for Birr Theatre this month.
All through November you can catch Orlagh M Murphy’s exhibition “Fragments of Home”. Orlagh began her career as an illustrator, before going on to work as a decorative and mural artist for architects and interior designers in Ireland, America and Japan. Now concentrating on her studio based practice, her current exhibition has been inspired by our idea of home and what we remember of the place that has coloured who we are today. The exhibition is open Monday to Friday from 1pm to 5.30pm and during performances.
On Friday, November 8 and Saturday, November 9 it’s the turn of the International Festival of a Necessarily Lonely You (IFONLY) by Legitimate Bodies Dance Company. Now in its sixth year, the festival is dedicated to solo artists and includes workshops, screenings and performances.
On Thursday, November 14 Birr Stage Guild brings “Death of a Salesman” to the stage. One of the most acclaimed American plays of the 20th century, it’s made up mostly of flashbacks chronicling the downfall of a 63 year old man struggling to keep his career alive. Thursday night tickets are €12, while tickets for shows next Friday, Saturday and Sunday at €16/€14.
On November 19 Birr Film Club takes over Birr Theatre with Spanish film “I’m So Excited”. In the film a Spanish airline flight is heading for Mexico City but it’s landing gear is crocked so the pilots circle over Spain while a trio of male cabin attendants entertain a handful of business class travellers. Tickets for the 8pm screening are €7/€5/€3.
On Friday, November 22 Kitchen Hero Donal Skehan is in town with his Homecooked Tour. The show will see him cook up meals live on stage, backed up by his new book HomeCooked and food range SKOFF. Tickets for the November 22 show are €20.
On Saturday, November 23 the Harbour Theatre Company brings “Breakfast at Dalkey” to Birr Theatre. Written and directed by Eddie Alford, the play set in 1930’s Dublin explores themes including emigration, death, betrayal, love and ballroom dancing. Tickets for the show are available for €12/€10.
On November 26 it’s once more the turn of Birr Film Club. This time the offering is French film “In the House”. High school literature teacher Germain lives a beige repetitive life, his despair at the state of contemporary education has given way to apathy and he is unaware of his wife’s boredom. Unexpectedly he discovers a student in his class who stirs his long dormant enthusiasm for his work. Claude develops a fascination with a woman and he serialises his encounters in essay form under the increasingly voracious guidance of Germain. Tickets are €7/€5/€3.
The final offering for November is Banagher Drama Group’s “Red Roses and Petrol” on November 29 and 30. Written by Joseph O’Connor, the play follows Moya Doyle, who is preparing for the funeral Mass of her husband Enda in her Dublin home. From England and America her children are returning for the sombre occasion but as ghosts of the Doyle’s past begin to materialise, the consequences are both profoundly disturbing and memorably comic. Tickets for this show are €13.
