Tenders for Edenderry school projects at evaluation stage

Hopes have this week been raised that much-needed and long-anticipated new school buildings for Scoil Bhride and Gaelscoil Eadan Doire in Edenderry will be in place to welcome students in September 2014.

Speaking to the Offaly Independent today (Wednesday) Sarah Moroney from the Department of Education and Skills press office confirmed that the closing date for tenders for the project was last Friday, October 25.

Ms Moroney said tenders for the projects are now at evaluation stage, and that subject to a successful evaluation process a contract for the jobs will be put in place in the coming weeks.

Planning permission was given for both new schools at Killane in Edenderry last year. Originally the new schools were to be quick build projects of 26 weeks and in place to welcome students last September. However back in May it was confirmed the quick build projects would not be going ahead after tenders received were in excess of the norm for similar school projects.

Reacting to the latest update Edenderry town councillor Noel Cribbin said it’s welcome news. “At least we’re this far down the road,” he said, adding that he hopes now a contractor can be on site by Christmas and the schools put in place for next September.

“Whoever the successful tender is, it’s important they know that we’ve plenty of qualified staff, from blocklayers to carpenters and plumbers, here in Edenderry,” he added.
