Bridal dash the highlight of Little Wishes run

A bridal dash is to be the highlight of the second annual Little Wishes fun run in Edenderry.

The event, which will also include a 5km/10km fun run and a fancy dress parade, will take place on October 28 next in aid of Little Wishes Edenderry, which was set up to provide treats for people affected by cancer in Edenderry and the surrounding areas.

“We are asking everyone who has a wedding dress, or can make up a fun wedding dress with sheets or net curtain, or fancies being a bridezilla, to join us in a dash from JKL Street to The Square,” organiser Nida Collins explained.

“We intend to get at least 100 brides to make the dash in honour of the women who are dealing with cancer and we welcome brave men who are up for the challenge. If you got married lately, or 50 years ago, root out your dress and veil and come along.”

The October bank holiday event will also include a balloon release in memory and celebration of the lives of those who have passed away from cancer.

At 1pm on the day there will be a Halloween fancy dress parade from Brady’s Spar to The Square, followed by a spooky grooves dancethon.

Afterwards both serious and fun runners are invited to take part in the official 5km/10km run. The run itself, which includes valuable prizes for the first three men and women, will begin at 2pm, but registration will begin at noon.

“There is power and healing in numbers,” Nida says. “The more people who come together in the name of health, in celebration of life, and in solidarity, the stronger we are to face the challenge of cancer.”

This year Little Wishes has already delivered over 50 wishes to local people, including vouchers for local restaurants, shops, boutiques, salons, sporting events and family days out.

The majority of wishes are bought from local businesses, so money raised by local people goes back into the local economy.

Volunteers are welcome to help decorate this year’s route and JKL Street, while those wishing to donate to the entertainment effort on the day and help with the clean up are also welcome.
