New five year arts plan launched for Offaly
A new five year arts plan for Offaly entitled "Question, Connect, Imagine, Reflect" was launched last Thursday at Birr Theatre. Those gathered for the launch, including the director of the Arts Council, Offaly's county manager, councillors and artists, were treated to performances by Offaly Youth Dance and Offaly Youth Theatre. The new plan covers the years 2012-2016 and was devised following a series of public meetings and project evaluations. The plan was formally adopted by Offaly County Council at its April meeting. Following the launch Arts Officer Sinead O'Reilly said the inclusion of youth groups at the event was not by chance. "We felt it was really important that we celebrate youth arts at this launch, so that we can clearly demonstrate the value of planning for the arts," she said. Speaking at the launch cathaoirleach of Offaly County Council Danny Owens outlined the plan's benefits. "The arts are what help to build the character of Offaly; they help make us distinctive, proud and innovative," he said. "This plan is for everyone in the county. Yes it sets out our leadership but it invites and encourages your ownership and your participation and your appreciation. We will constantly strive to achieve this, and as a council to support and celebrate the creative and cultural uniqueness of Offaly." County Manager Pat Gallagher remarked that culture and the arts has become one of the pillars of sustainability in public planning. He added that while the financial climate cannot be ignored neither can the arts, which he credited with contributing to the growth in innovation and cultural tourism. The county was congratulated by the Arts Council on flagship projects including Youth Arts, FilmOffaly, Anam Beo and plans for an arts centre in Tullamore.
