Rahan NS meet their local councillors

Fifth and sixth class students from Rahan National School attended the March meeting of Offaly County Council, in a bid to find out about local politics. This visit to the council chambers is part of the Offaly County Council 'Getting to know your Local Authority' programme. Cathaoirleach Barry Cowan welcomed the party into the Council Chamber where, for a short period, where they observed the business of the day. The students then met the Ferbane Area Elected Members for a question and answer session. Issues that the students highlighted for their area to the Councillors were better access to broadband in the Rahan area, improved playground facilities and improved road surfaces in rural areas. Students also paid a visit to the Civic Amenity Site at Derryclure, Tullamore where Executive Technician Brendan King provided a highly educational overview on the provision and maintenance of the landfill. Bird Watch Ireland were also on hand with the hawks which are used to keep birds at bay. Next stop was the Tullamore Fire Station where Assistant Fire Chief Denis Canty provided an overview of the Fire Service and Station Officer Liam Dunne gave a talk and tour of the Fire Tenders and equipment. After lunch, the students were met by Senior Executive Technician Stan McKeon who gave a talk on Áras an Chontae with particular reference to the sustainability of the building.
