Purcell Cup success for Offaly camogie quintet
Five Offaly players helped the Athlone IT camogie team to win the Purcell Cup last Sunday. The Offaly quintet of Laura Devery (St Rynagh"s), Fiona Stephens (Drumcullen), Siobhan Flannery (St Rynagh"s), Arlene Watkins (Birr) and Ashling Daly (St Rynagh"s) were all part of the AIT squad. Who defeated Mary Immaculate College 3-13 to 2-10, after extra-time, in an exciting final which was played in Limerick. The Offaly connection extended to the AIT management team, with Birr man Camillus King at the helm, along with Noel Lawlor from Portumna. Offaly camogie has been enjoying good times in recent years. The junior team was very unlucky to be defeated by Clare in last year"s All-Ireland final, and Michaela Morkan (Shinrone) became the county"s first camogie All-Star at the end of the season. Meanwhile, training for this year"s county junior panel continues on Friday nights in Crinkle at 8pm. Following the cancellation of the two games against Dublin and Armagh, Offaly will have to wait for their first outing in the National League.
